The first thing you should do is reboot your computer to see if Windows Update gets back to normal. Sometimes a reboot is all a stuck app or service needs. However, if that doesn’t work, you’ll need to perform some advanced cleanup.

How to Fix a Stuck Windows Update Manually

If rebooting your computer doesn’t help, you should try deleting Windows Update cache. Here’s how:

1. Right-click the Start menu, choose “Command Prompt (Admin)” and then click Yes to confirm that you want to run the Command Prompt as administrator
2. Now we need to stop the Windows update service. To do that, type net stop wuauserv and hit Enter
   
3. Now open File Explorer and go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
4. Delete everything from that folder, so that Windows Update can recreate it the right way next time you run it
5. Now go back to the Command Prompt window, type net start wuauserv and hit Enter
6. Close the Command Prompt windows and restart Windows. Things should go back to normal and Windows Update won’t be stuck anymore.
