How to Fix a Stuck Windows Update Automatically
The first thing you should do is reboot your computer to see if Windows Update gets back to normal. Sometimes a reboot is all a stuck app or service needs. However, if that doesn’t work, you’ll need to perform some advanced cleanup.

How to Fix a Stuck Windows Update Manually
If rebooting your computer doesn’t help, you should try deleting Windows Update cache. Here’s how:
- Right-click the Start menu, choose “Command Prompt (Admin)” and then click Yes to confirm that you want to run the Command Prompt as administrator
- Now we need to stop the Windows update service. To do that, type net stop wuauserv and hit Enter
- Now open File Explorer and go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
- Delete everything from that folder, so that Windows Update can recreate it the right way next time you run it
- Now go back to the Command Prompt window, type net start wuauserv and hit Enter
- Close the Command Prompt windows and restart Windows. Things should go back to normal and Windows Update won’t be stuck anymore.
