3 Effective Ways to Uninstall Problematic Windows 10 Updates
Windows 10 users are familiar with mixed feelings with excitement about new features and anxiety about the problems new updates might cause. And that’s not surprising if we remember the number of times Microsoft’s updates had gone wrong and damaged thousands of systems. Windows 10 build 2004 was, perhaps, the most disastrous update of them all. Even Microsoft admitted it and postponed automatic updates for a lot of machines (you might want to check out this post to find out if Windows 10 2004 is now safe to download and install).
But what if you’ve already installed a rogue update and it’s wreaking havoc on your PC? In this post, we’ll share with you 3 effective ways to uninstall problematic Windows 10 updates to get your computer back to normal.
Method 1: Uninstall Windows Updates from Settings
If you know which update you want to uninstall, the easiest way to do that is to head over to Settings.
- Press the Windows key + X and select “Settings”
- In the Settings, go to the “Update and Security” section
- Click on “Windows Update” in the left sidebar and then select “View update history”
- Click on the “Uninstall updates” link on the next screen
- Review your installed updates, select the one you want to uninstall, and click on “Uninstall”
Method 2: Uninstall Windows Feature Update
If you encounter problems and errors because of a Windows feature updates (such as Windows 10 build 2004 also known as the May 2020 update), you can undo it and return your system back to normal. Here’s how:
- Press the Windows + X and select “Settings”
- In the Settings, go to the “Update and Security” section
- Select “Recovery” and click on the “Get started” button under “Go back to the previous version of Windows 10”
- Windows will ask you why you want to roll back. Select an option and then click “Next”
- Windows 10 will then offer to check for updates in hope that there are hotfixes. You can do that or click on “No, thanks” to proceed with the rollback
- After that, follow the prompts until you get a screen with the “Go back to earlier build” button.
Note: make sure you read all the prompts carefully to avoid software conflicts and prevent getting locked out of your system.
Your Windows 10 will get back to an earlier build and the problematic update will be uninstalled.
Method 3: Uninstall Windows 10 Updates on System Boot
Another way to uninstall Windows 10 updates that are causing problems is to boot into Advanced Options and uninstall from there.
- Press the Windows + X and select “Settings”
- In the Settings, go to the “Update and Security” section
- Click on “Advanced startup” and then click on “Troubleshoot”
- Click on “Advanced options” and then on “Uninstall updates”
- Then click on “Uninstall latest security update” or “Uninstall latest feature update”
- Follow the prompts
